You go down rabbit holes with more nervous rapture than anyone I know, it’s beautiful, really…(btw, Red gave Buk a look at my writing when I was still a dirty Hollywood blvd teen nihilist, I expected at least some acknowledgment, I got derision from my lit hero at the time instead, not over the work, but because I asked him about it like I deserved an answer, like a dumb kid, was like ‘fuck bukowski’ until barfly came out & I knew at first watch he had been done wrong, read ‘Hollywood’ later & I kinda felt sorry for him, he was a struggling alcoholic living with cats in San Pedro by then) btw, the Morris link teared me up, I watched it with my 4 yr old, Bucky was right about something, that’s real… RIP to the youngster…
Anna Joy wrote some great ones, but I get why you wouldn’t want to reference that one with a link… I got put into a few post breakup songs, we’re always a work in progress… I’m fully finding this elusive ‘cat person’ book interesting, I might have the evil rocketman bezos send me a copy of the renamed version…
Yeah, Jesse and I talked a lot between meetings, about life, the universe, and everything. I loved that guy. He tried to kill himself twice and got it right once. It was on the bad side of a Suboxone run, something I never want to experience—I've heard it's absolute hell.
I remember you talking about him. Just a kid, right? Can't confirm what a sub detox is like, but I definitely know the hell of an opiate withdrawal and I wouldn't wish it on too many people, except maybe the entire current administration.
When I heard about his passing it hurt, he had always been so genuine & vulnerable at the gathering I attended with you guys whenever I was in town, so I felt that one…
He wrote one called Tenderloin Armageddon that was about Jesus coming back and healing everyone in the TL. That's the one that always made me break down.
I forgot all about this, though remember the story and the Slate article that came out about it. Patricia Lockwood (Priestdaddy) was an obscure poet plucked from the slush pile too - I believe the New Yorker as well - who's since made out alright. After that, she wrote "Rape Joke" her "viral poem" - a concept that does not exist outside of this one example (I think). A wild time, the early '10s.
I had no idea Roupenian wrote Bodies, Bodies, Bodies? What a fun flick. I've only read Cat Person once, but I remember it and the sensation vividly. This is a rough calling we've chosen to follow, is the general gist I get from this piece.
"If Bucky's Right" is great. Is he talking about your atheism? That's what I assume without a full lyric sheet to follow. But it's a cool song. What's the other one?!
Also, always love your writing in these pieces, of course, and your analogies, but I confess I didn't understand this: "it’s the same amount of time between when you think your prom tux looks cool and when you hide it between pages of the DSM-IV that you use to anchor your bookshelf." Are you hiding a photo of your prom tux, or the whole actual tux in that big book? ;>)
“Not even Kanopy! Straight to Hoopla”. This is the funniest line I’ve read in ages!
I’m glad you caught that!

The other song was one Anna Joy wrote I think about men in general but I was definitely part of that one! Fresh after a breakup.

You know, I misspelled it when I first looked for it. I thought it wasn't online. Here you go. "You're a job" ha ha

Oof. That's some dark beauty right there.

This is one of those stories in which I think I have access to less than 10% of the facts I want.

Lots to say about her but this line...wow. I need to deep dive on her work
I shall find you a link. One moment.
Sic transit gloria mundi...
Fame, man. I still want it. Clearly, however, at 59 I have long since proved that I can live without it. And likely will.
Well said
Is the moral of the story 'Uncle Bucky told you so'?

oh jeez, you're right, it's the photo that you hide in some old big book no one will look in.
and yeah, jesse was singing about my atheism, which both intrigued him and he thought it was absolutely wrong.
I was coming into the comments to say that that specific line cracked me up, so there ya go
I figured it was a kind of rebuke, but with a sense of being unsettled by the possibility.
